Position: General Manager

Reports to: CSA Council through the President

 

Job Overview

The General Manager of the Caribbean Shipping Association (CSA) is one of the most prominent, highly visible representatives of the shipping industry in the Caribbean and will administer the secretariat of an organization that is the key membership services provider in the maritime sector across the Caribbean region. The General Manager provides vision and leadership for the Caribbean Shipping Association (CSA) in its varied role of supporting the development of national shipping associations across the Caribbean and in helping to develop the business of shipping in member territories; as well as in expanding the membership of the CSA across the region.

 

The General Manager will achieve this inter alia by:

  • Working with the General Council to establish policy, develop consensus on strategy and direction and assure fiscal soundness
  • Assisting the General Council in establishing strategic goals and objectives.
  • Effectively managing resources for the Association.
  • Recruiting, managing, developing, evaluating and retaining highly qualified and motivated support personnel, including temporary staff
  • Leading strategic planning of the organization to ensure CSA meets the dynamic needs of its community and leverages resources to achieve greatest impact
  • Working with staff to oversee the formulation and implementation of an operational plan consistent with the strategic plan
  • Supervising the major operational functions of the Association.
  • Cultivating strong relationships with key community, education, government, regional and other organizations, including shipping associations and ports authorities and their leadership • Managing communications and relationships with the Council and members
  • Ensuring that the organization fulfills the goals adopted by the Council
  • Building coalitions necessary to accomplish organizational goals
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as required under the direction of the General Council.
  • Recommending modifications to bylaws, staffing, programmes and committees.
  • Striving to evaluate and implement continuous improvement to work processes, while maintaining high quality standard Secretariat.
  • Engaging volunteers in the work of the Association where appropriate
  • Identifying and adopting best practices employed by other organizations

Specific Duties

  • Manage the affairs of the Association and perform functions as delegated by the General Council
  • Implemented policies formulated by General Council • Identify new revenue streams for the CSA
  • Supervise the work of the Secretariat
  • Plan the Annual General Meeting and the annual Caribbean Shipping Executives Conference of the CSA
  • Coordinate and plan all meetings of the CSA
  • Develop Executive action plans arising from CSA meetings
  • Approve invoices for payment
  • Represent CSA at meetings and fora as required
  • Report on the administration of CSA at meetings
  • Liaise with auditors in the annual financial audit of the association
  • Preside over the election of officers at the Annual General Meeting.
  • Supervise the provision of Communications and Public Relations services (which includes the CSA’s website) and liaise with the publishers of CSA publications, and any other corporate communication media to manage the public image of the Association

Job Requirements

Education

  • Bachelors degree required
  • MBA (or related advanced degree) is ideal
  • Experience required
  • Minimum of five (5) years experience at a senior executive level in nonprofit, business, or the public sector; ideally in as Chief Executive Officer
  • Experience in a senior management position in a company or organization with cross- border operations and interactions
  • Establishing organizational goals and objectives and the ability to translate into effective action
  • Human Resource management and development.
  • Fundraising, sales, and/or sponsorship solicitation. . . significant results (major targets achieved)
  • Marketing and/or member services
  • Public relations and/or communications
  • Management of finance and budget
  • Experience with Board of Directors
  • Experience with building alliances
  • Knowledge of the Caribbean region preferred

At the direction of the General Council, the General Manager will develop and maintain cordiality and contact with a wide variety of local, regional and state organizations, submitting documented reports and assessments for deliberations of General Council, including but not limited to the following:

  • CSA Council Members
  • Government leaders
  • Mayors of towns and municipalities
  • Elected and appointed public officials
  • Community-based agencies/partners
  • National Shipping Associations and Ports Authorities
  • Local, regional and national Customs, Security and Border Protection organizations
  • Small, medium and large business owners
  • National, state, and local media across the Caribbean, North America and Europe
  • University, community and technical college leaders
  • Major and minor sponsors

 

The position offers excellent compensation with a performance-based component.
